Both the town of Kuressaare and Saaremaa in
general, offer plenty to do all year round.
During the summer months visitors arrive on
the island from all over Europe and enjoy
long sunny days, and high temperatures. The
Baltic Sea can beat the Mediterranean in
terms of temperature and the endless, clean
quiet beaches amaze first time visitors.
Swimming anywhere in Saaremaa is safe and
enjoyable. The relatively low salt content
of the coastal waters also make a for a
pleasant contrast to more well-known coastal
holiday areas. In Kuressaare itself, there
is a nice swimming beach. Look for the sign
to "Supelrand". It's very close to the
Castle Park.
By contrast, Winter can be harsh in Estonia,
although the 2007/8 winter was extremely
mild by Estonian standards. Few visitors
come to Saaremaa in the winter months other
then for short-break Spa tourism.
Close to Kuressaare there are many
activities to try and places to visit.
Here's our selection;
Kuressaare Yacht Harbour
This is an international port for small
ships. The harbour has received the Blue
Flag for environmental friendliness since
2004.
Golf Course
Opening in
2008, this new 18 hole
golf course is the first town-located
golf course in Estonia.
Suur Toll and his wife
Suur Toll
This is a sculpture by famous Estonian scultor
Tauno Kangro (2002) of the ancient heroes of
Saaremaa, recalling the legend of the
mythical Saaremaa giant Suur Toll protecting
his home island.
Health Park
Located in
a 36 hectare forest grove, there are two trails open
year round for all who want to enjoy health
and nature.
Bike and Rollerblade path
Kuressaare is very cycle friendly with
pathways both to the Roomasaare Port and out
of town towards Kuivastu. Being flat,
cycling is very easy in Saaremaa.
Nightlife
There are many
different restaurants, pubs and nightclubs
in Kuressaare, where you can enjoy live
music until early morning.
Shops
There are several
new shopping centres where you can find
major retailers, an outdoor marketplace with
locally made handicrafts, and a charming Old
Town area with small independent shops,
property agents and cafes.
Sports Facilities
Kuressaare is definitely the right place for
physical activities. Golfing, cycling,
tennis, football, kite-surfing and more.
