Although Saaremaa is claimed to be the
geographic centre of Europe [Source:
Wikipedia -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saaremaa] it can still be a
challenge planning a trip to the Island.
Saaremaa and it's sister island, Muhu, are
separated from the mainland by a 7km stretch
of sea. The ferry from Virtsu on the
mainland to Kuivastu takes around 35 minutes
and operates on the hour from early morning
until late evening. The local ferry company
web site and timetable are a useful
reference. See
http://www.laevakompanii.ee.
The ferry at Kuivastu
Travel time by bus from Tallinn takes around
4 hours and provides an interesting trip
through Estonia's countryside. The journey
is split up with the final stretch of road
after the ferry trip taking around 1 hour.
The distance between Kuivastu to Kuressaare
is around 76km.
For those not so seen on a long journey by
road and sea, there are direct flights from
Tallinn taking only around 40 minutes. Check
with the local airline [See
http://www.avies.ee ] as flights may not
be available every day and are often fully
booked. A small propeller aircraft is used
on the route and seats only 18 people.
Several new direct flights to Saaremaa are
now available. One example is the Estonian
Air service from Stockholm which flies twice
per week. Check the service at
http://www.estonianair.com.
If travelling from the UK, there are routes
from London Stansted to Tallin via Easyjet
and from Glasgow Prestwick to both Stockholm
and Riga in Latvia. An interesting travel
option is to arrive in Riga and to make your
way by road to Ventspils. From here, a
regular ferry takes approximately 4 hours to
make the crossing to Montu on Saaremaa. This
is only around 30 minutes drive from
Kuressaare.
Car hire is relatively inexpensive on
Saaremaa and it's cheaper to rent while on
the island than to rent in Tallinn. If you
